Welcome — by Jennifer Hughes, Vice President, Student Services, College of San Mateo
The San Mateo County Community College District, including College of San Mateo, Skyline College, and Cañada College, has a welcoming attitude toward younger students and encourages concurrent enrollment. We thank them for hosting this event!
Keynote Speaker — Wes Beach, Beach High School
Wes Beach has helped over a thousand students move on to college and adventures on their own, with those students often skipping much or even all of high school. He has also assisted many students with concurrent enrollment at community colleges as part of their education as homeschoolers.
Wes is an entertaining speaker who will talk about choosing, applying to, and being accepted at colleges in California as a young homeschooler, relating stories of the many young people he has helped on the way to their destinies. Wes's own son took his first college course as a ten-year-old, and had earned his Bachelor's degree by age 17 and, after a few years of work, his Ph.D. Wes has worked with many other young people who are on a different timetable, and who have more imaginative goals, than that which traditional education allows. Wes takes a creative approach to helping intelligent young people access college courses and any other educational strategies they desire. He has worked with colleges and universities all over California, and beyond, and will share his inside information about colleges in which we are specifically interested.
He will also talk about the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) and the issues surrounding it that concern many homeschooling parents. He'll answer our many questions and we'll leave feeling enlightened and inspired about early college access for our children.
Information From these Community Colleges and State Universities
Young College Student Panel — A panel of young teens who are already taking community college classes will talk about their experiences and take questions from their younger counterparts.
Questions and Discussion — We'll have lots of time to ask questions about specific colleges and scenarios. Wes Beach and our young college student panel will be available for as many follow-up questions as we have, and we'll have a discussion within our community about strategies for early college access.
Refreshments and Networking — Meet other families with advanced students who are interested in early college for their children.
Recommended Prerequisite — Wes Beach has published a valuable booklet, Opportunities After "High School": Thoughts, Documents, Resources. If you purchase this book and read it before the workshop, it will answer many of your basic questions as well as providing inspirational examples. This booklet is as valuable for someone with a 10-, 11-, or 12-year-old who wants to attend college classes as it is for those with teenagers. It includes a number of transcripts Wes Beach has written for his students. It discusses community college enrollment; preparing for, choosing, and applying to four-year colleges; and opportunities other than formal academic study. A number of resource books are described. Send your check for $15 to Wes Beach, Beach High School, 5520 Old San Jose Road, Soquel, CA 95073.
